Finding Joy: At the Bookstore

Sometimes normal, every day things happen in a funny order or with odd timing that makes me laugh. Like when I was shopping for my husband’s birthday present. I got him a tennis skirt. Well, not for him, for me. But, for him because he really, really likes tennis skirts. So, even though I’m not playing tennis now, I figured I could wear it, well, you know, around the house.

Then I thought I would get him a book of some kind, you know, along a similar theme, which is also really for me, because he isn’t into the books, but he is into me when I’m into the books, so I figured it would all work out. So, I’m at Barnes and Noble looking in the Sexuality section.

I like shopping with Baby Girl because I feel very popular. Lots of people turn to look and complete strangers start conversations with me. They all ask “How old is she?” or “How old is HE” if she isn’t dressed head-to-toe in pink. Then they say how beautiful she is, which is SO true.

So, I’m shopping with Baby Girl in her stroller, looking in the Sexuality section at Barnes and Noble and it does feel a little weird, like she is too young to be exposed to adult material. But I know logically that she can’t read or even see more than eighteen inches, so she is pretty safe.

Then a woman walks by and smiles at Baby Girl and asks “How old is he,” because she is wearing an orange outfit. I tell her she is thirteen weeks old and she starts to tell me how beautiful he is.

Then she glances at the book in my hands, which is oversized with full color pictures, something about erotic massage for couples and she stops talking and gets a little pink in her cheeks.

I just smile. It makes me laugh a little inside and I like to laugh in the middle of the day. “Yes, I think she is beautiful, too,” I say.

You know, they can have their ears pierced and be wearing pink and people will still ask how old HE is! So, did you buy the book?
